Guppy (Poecilia reticulata)

Also: Millions fish, lebistes reticulares

Family: Live-bearing toothcarp of the family Poeciliidae.

Characteristic: About 2.4 in (6 cm), male has copulatory organ.

Tank and water: 10 gallons, pH 5.5-7.5, 76-86 F (24-30 C)

Care: As a group in tanks that are densely planted in parts. Varied diet including all smaller foods, also plant matter.

Habits: Standing and gently flowing waters of northern South America. Released into the wild worldwide.

Compatibility: With small catfish, characins, and dwarf cichlids. Best kept as a single species or with bottom fish.

Personal note: They are usually in the upper part of the aquarium. We have a male that doesn’t stop trying to mate with a Blue Platy, so we got some females but they are still in another aquarium for quarantine. They can be very easy to breed.

I too have recently bought 2 blue platies and my male guppy has taken a fancy to 1 of them n wont leave it alone... i'm sure he's trying to mate with it. Do you suggest i get a couple of females for company? It's strange tho he's never had a liking for my sunset platies haha!

I think guppies like to follow other fish around, as well as each other. They're just curious and energetic, so the guppy may or may not be wanting to mate with the platy. It probably just wants to play. If you put in another guppy, male or female, it will probably chase after that one too. They like company, so if your tank can handle it, your guppy will appreciate the company of another guppy. However, if you get a female, there's a good chance you'll end up with 40 more guppies.
